Embrace innovation – a commentary on Apple Vision Pro

The digital world is always changing. Every day new technologies, software, and techniques become available. To stay on top of the industry and create the best work we can, we need to explore and be willing to embrace these new innovations.

On June 5, 2023, Apple announced their latest and greatest innovation: The Vision Pro. A mixed-reality headset that combines the real world with the virtual. The system allows user to place windows in the real world with them, making for an immersive experience.

Apple has focused their marketing on this product as mainly an entertainment device. They show games being played, as well as the ability to create an imax-size movie screen in the comfort of your own home.

These features are great and all, but my first thoughts were about the endless possibilities of creative applications for the device.

On a basic level, one feature the Vision Pro offers is the ability to connect it directly to a MacBook. When paired, you can create whatever sized screen that works with your existing keyboard and mouse.

Image traveling to another country and heaving a deadline approaching. This technology would allow you to have a high-res screen at whatever size you want, right in front of you on a plane. For wirestock or sports photographers as well, who need to have their work turned around quickly, they can have a screen much larger than their 14-inch MacBook no matter where they are working.

This already is great, but let’s take it even further. For designers or architects using 3D design programs, imagine being able to see your work, in three dimensions right in front of you. This would allow you to prototype your work without having to actually create it in person. This is a game changer.

The point here is that when new technology like this comes out, the possibilities are absolutely endless. As creatives we must jump headfirst into these technologies because they may become incredible assets.

With technology like the Vision Pro and AI, the conversation always seems to turn toward fear. People are afraid of the digital world taking over the physical. To that I say, innovation will not stop. These things are tools, and they need to be used as such. Using these technologies properly and ethically will allow us to create better work all around.

We can’t forget, art and design began with markings on cave walls centuries ago. If we didn’t embrace the technology that came our way, we would have the luxuries we do.
