AI – a content creator’s new best friend

With the rise of Open AI’s ChatGPT and other similar platforms, artificial intelligence – or AI – has been at the forefront of many conversations. People are excited, people are scared, people are confused. There are a lot of emotions that comes with these new innovations. But what exactly are we getting into?

First off, what exactly is AI? It is “technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human intelligence and problem-solving capabilities” according to IBM. These systems are “trained” off of existing date in order to allow them to act like humans. This is how ChatGPT is able to respond to you in a manner that sounds like your buddy is texting you. Open AI has trained that model off of actual conversation and information from humans.

ChatGPT is an AI model that focuses on generating copy based on prompts from the user. Although this is one of the most common models we see, there are a ton of other types of AI models that have been created over the past few years. Some of these include image generation, deep fakes, and recognition technology.

These systems are being implemented everywhere you can imagine. Google, Apple, and Bing– to name a few – are some large-scale companies that have implemented AI models into their products for one reason or another.

For us content creators, one that really hits at home is Adobe’s implementation. Their new Generative AI features have been fully released in Photoshop and Firefly and will be added to Premiere Pro in the coming months. This feature allows people to circle an area of their image, type in a prompt, and watch as the program adds exactly what they asked for.

This system is not perfect obviously, but the results that you can get from Generative AI are pretty impressive.

Now for the question that everyone seems to be asking: is AI going to take your job? No, at least not yet.

As content creators, AI alone cannot do everything that a human can. These platforms, however, do allow us to speed up our workflows and better fulfill our creative visions. Take photography for example, generative AI has allowed me to remove distractions from images, enhancing the quality of them.

The reality is that AI models are tools and nothing more. They need human intervention in order to get the most out of them. Not to mention, these models are trained off of human work. They would be nothing without us.

When it comes to AI’s effect on our world, it comes down to embracing this fantastic new technology and using them ethically. This will allow you to create better work than you were able to before these tools existed.
